Sandra “Sandi” Deremer Emerson, 76, of Cumberland, a lay member of the conference, died from cancer March 22, 2014. She was secretary of New Covenant UMC in Cumberland. As per her wishes, she was cremated. Rev. Dr. Chris Gobrecht officiated at a memorial service March 27 at New Covenant UMC.

Sandra Deremer was born March 16, 1938, in Cumberland, the daughter of the late William and Mollie (Carr) Deremer. She was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1956.

The church held a special place in her heart as well as her life. She especially enjoyed the choir, having started to sing at age six at the old First Methodist Church on Bedford Street. She told her children she could at least make a joyful noise to the Lord. She served on a number of church committees, and enjoyed helping the Family Life committee, which prepared bereavement dinners for church families. Emerson loved all animals, especially her rescued greyhounds.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Emerson; two children, Terri Emerson of Cumberland and Brent Emerson of Annapolis; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, nieces, nephews and cousins.
