Obituaries - April 14, 2014 - Rev. Philip J. Kemper

The Rev. Philip J. Kemper, 91, a retired member of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, died April 14 in York, Pa. His funeral was held April 19 at Hartenstein Mortuary in New Freedom, Pa., officiated by the Rev. David Brinker and Pastor Dennis McCleary.

Kemper was born April 28, 1922, to George E. and Orpha L. Orndorff Kemper in Hunterstown, Pa.

He was a graduate of Columbia Bible College in Columbia, S.C., Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas, and Texas-Wesleyan College, also in Ft. Worth.

Prior to his transfer into the Baltimore-Washington Conference in 1965, he was a Baptist minister for 22 years in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He founded Seven Valleys Baptist Church, Oak View Baptist Church in Glenville and Westminster Baptist Church.

His first United Methodist appointment was to Union Bridge from 1965 to 1967, then to Stone Chapel in Westminster. In 1971, he went to the Grace-Bosley Charge in Hampstead, followed by Lodge Forest UMC n Edgemere from 1978 to 1983. From 1983 to 1987, he served Middle River UMC in Orems, then was appointed to Whiteford Charge until his retirement in 1992.

He and Lucille E. Burdick married in 1946 and had four daughters who survive.

In addition to pastoring, Kemper prepared income taxes for 34 years.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, daughters Ruth K. Michael of Pueblo, Colo., Mary K. Gearhart of Blakeslee, Pa., Ann. L. Kemper of York, Pa., and Catherine K. Fronck of Martinsburg, W.Va.; four granddaughters; one step grandson; and five great-granddaughters.
