The Washington Region will hold its Lay Servant Academy Sept. 9-10. Classes may be taken at any BWC District Lay Servant Academy or online at BeADisciple.com. For additional information on lay servant classes, download the Lay Servant Ministries Catalog. 

The 10-hour course will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, and from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. 

The deadline for registration is Sept. 4. The cost is $40. This fee does not include the textbook cost.

Basic Lay Servant Course ~ Instructor: Rev. Dr. Sue Shorb-Sterling
This course will help laity explore and discover their unique call in serving God, neighbor, and the greater church. It is foundational for all courses in lay servant ministries and must be taken by everyone seeking certification as a lay servant, lay speaker, or lay minister. 

Called to Preach (Advanced Course) ~ Instructor: Rev. Michael Parker, II
Called to Preach is designed for those who have not completed formal preaching training, for pastors seeking a basic refresher course, and for others who are called upon to preach in a pastor’s absence. Called to Preach is the required preaching course in the lay speaker track of study.  To successfully complete this session, the instructor requests additional hours on Saturday, September 16 beginning at 10:00am to complete a preaching practice session. 

United Methodist Polity (Advanced Course) ~ Instructor: Rev. Erik Alsgaard
This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. A copy of the 2016 Book of Discipline is recommended (you might consider borrowing a copy from your church) for this course in addition to the required text.
