A joyful sound echoed across the waters of the West River Center on June 28, as 23 candidates from all walks of life stepped into the water to be baptized under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Gay Green-Carden, pastor of Asbury Jessup United Methodist Church. This sacred ceremony marked a powerful movement of the Holy Spirit, drawing hearts closer to Christ in a moment of public witness and transformation.

Rev. Green-Carden was joined in ministry by Certified Lay Leader Lesa Lindsay, Rev. Terry McCain of Hopkins UMC, and Morgan Smith, President of the Annapolis United Methodist Men. Together, they served not only as leaders but as spiritual witnesses to the power of rebirth.

One of the most moving moments of the day came unexpectedly. A young man who had arrived simply to observe the baptismal ceremony turned to his grandfather, Rev. McCain, and said, “I want to get baptized.” Rev. McCain, overwhelmed with joy, had the sacred privilege of baptizing his grandson, a true testament to the living presence of God’s spirit in every heart open to transformation.

Rev. Gay Green-Carden shared, “This day has been months in the making. I have spent intentional time preparing each candidate through teaching, prayer, and discernment. It’s been a journey, and what a joy to see it culminate in this holy moment!”

This year’s baptism was particularly significant as it marked a return to West River. In the same place, 18 candidates were baptized several years ago, reflecting the continued growth of Asbury Jessup’s youth and young adult ministries. Ministries that have thrived since the COVID pandemic through virtual discipleship and the church’s “One Hour of Power Worship Services.”

The celebration was further lifted by the mime ministry of Corey Lytle, who stirred hearts with a soul-stirring interpretation of “I Know I’ve Been Changed,” followed by Olivia Allen, whose voice soared through the air with a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Rev. Green-Carden preached a timely message titled “I’m Moving On,” encouraging all present to walk in the newness of life and faith. The joyful service concluded with a community barbecue and pool fellowship, reinforcing the spirit of unity, celebration, and renewal.

“To God be the glory for the great things God is doing,” said Rev. Green-Carden. “Lives are being changed, generations are being reached, and the church is alive with the Spirit of God.”

This moment was more than a baptism; it was a revival at the river.
