Miracle Sunday Initiative Update

Beloved in Christ,
You may recall that I shared with you an initiative emerging from the Council of Bishops for our congregations to participate in Miracle Sunday. This is a bold and joyful initiative designed to strengthen the future of The United Methodist Church by investing in theological education and the formation of leaders in Africa, Europe and the Philippines. The miracle offering follows the model of 1 Chronicles 29, as we give generously from the blessings we have received from God. Together, United Methodists around the world will raise up new generations of clergy leaders through a one-time worldwide offering.
I am grateful to share that the Council of Bishops, in partnership with Endowing United Methodist Theological Education, has now released materials to support congregations who wish to engage in this initiative. We realize that amid the deep undertaking of our Hubs and the external challenges you are confronting, your plates are full. Yet many have voiced a desire to participate in this excellent endeavor. As you are able, I encourage you to engage these resources, which provide context, worship ideas, and guidance for congregations.
Within the Baltimore-Washington and Peninsula-Delaware Conferences, our leadership team has been prayerfully discerning how we might join this movement in a meaningful and faithful way, and we have identified a path for our Area to make a significant contribution to the Miracle Sunday Initiative.
Some resources compiled for our global partnerships have not been fully engaged due to the pandemic and other circumstances beyond our control. We believe it is good stewardship to use those funds to support the future of the global church and to raise up the next generation of faithful, courageous, and well-equipped leaders who will proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in a rapidly changing world.
While the episcopal office is making this contribution on behalf of the Area, clergy and congregations who feel so led are also welcome to participate by using the provided resources.
Theological education matters. It forms pastors and leaders who help our congregations live out the vision to love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously. I give thanks for the generosity, faithfulness, and vision that continue to define the Baltimore-Washington and Peninsula-Delaware Area. Together, we are helping to shape a future where the church remains vibrant, Spirit-led, and equipped to transform the world.
Blessings and peace,
Bishop LaTrelle Easterling
