Our Mission
Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century (SBC21) is a vital ministry of the Baltimore-Washington Conference committed to equipping, resourcing, and empowering Black churches to thrive spiritually, missionally, and organizationally in a rapidly changing world.
Our Purpose
SBC21 exists to:
- Support and sustain the growth and vitality of historically Black congregations.
- Develop and deploy leaders who are rooted in faith, culturally attuned, and missionally driven.
- Confront systemic inequities and foster spiritual transformation through the lens of the Black church experience.
- Build strategic partnerships between congregations, communities, and conference leadership.
Current Initiatives for 2025-2026
- Culture of Call: Cultivating pathways for Black clergy and lay leadership through mentorship, discernment, and intentional recruitment.
- Vital Congregations: Supporting churches with tools for strategic planning, worship innovation, and congregational care.
- Community Impact: Partnering with local and regional initiatives to address racial justice, economic empowerment, and holistic well-being.
