Cultivating Creation Care and Community Resilience

Posted by on

At Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, the Green Team has been working hard, turning faith into action through a series of innovative environmental initiatives that serve both our congregation and the broader Ward 7 community.

Managing Water Runoff and Preventing Flooding
Recognizing the impact of stormwater on our church property and neighborhood, the Green Team spearheaded efforts to manage water runoff and prevent flooding. Their significant accomplishments include the construction of a bioretention cell. This natural system filters and absorbs rainwater by installing cisterns to collect and reuse it, and by planting native plants and trees throughout the church grounds. These native species not only beautify our property but also play a vital role in absorbing excess water and providing habitat for local wildlife.

Education and Partnership with the National Wildlife Federation
Our commitment to creation care goes beyond landscaping. The Green Team continues to collaborate with the National Wildlife Federation, participating in the Sacred Grounds program to educate our congregation and neighbors about the importance of native plants. Through workshops, plant giveaways, and community events, we are helping others discover how even small changes in their yards can make a big difference for the environment and wildlife.

The Tree of Life Program: Growing for the Future
This fall, the Green Team is launching its latest project: the Tree of Life program. This initiative will create another native plant garden, further expanding our efforts to restore natural habitats and promote biodiversity on church grounds. By involving members of all ages in planting and caring for the garden, we nurture our environment and sense of community.

Jones Energy Conservation Connection: Empowering Ward 7
Environmental stewardship at Jones Memorial also means helping our neighbors save energy and money. Through the Jones Energy Conservation Connection, we provide the Ward 7 community with education and resources on topics such as weatherization, reducing energy consumption, and practical steps to make homes and churches greener and more efficient. These programs not only lower utility bills but also contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

A Living Witness
The work of the Green Team is a living witness to our call as stewards of God’s creation. Through hands-on projects, education, and outreach, we are building a legacy of care, resilience, and hope, one tree, one garden, and one neighbor at a time.

We invite everyone to join us in these efforts, whether by volunteering, attending an upcoming workshop, or simply planting a native flower in your yard. Together, we can make a lasting impact on God’s creation and our community.

Jones Memorial UMC’s Green Team is managed by laity members Rosa Jackson and Gloria Robinson. To learn more about establishing your green team, please contact the Creation Care Team Chair, Sharee Wharton.
