La Plata UMC returns to sanctuary

After months of repairing damage from an April 28 tornado, La Plata UMC will worship in its restored sanctuary for the first time Sept. 8 at 10 a.m.

The church will also host an open house in the sanctuary that day, 5 to 7 p.m., followed by a 30 minute concert of classical music.

Reconstruction continues on the adjacent education wing and offices, which were devastated by the more than 140-mile-per-hour winds.

According to the Rev. Edward Voorhaar, pastor, the rebuilding is expected to continue for up to another year.

The church offices are currently housed in the former parsonage located next to the church building. Trailers onsite are being used for temporary classrooms, the Blessed Lambs church preschool and church meetings.

Since April, the congregation has met at McDonough High School, six miles from the church.
