Rev. Edwin H. Langrall

The Rev. Edwin H. Langrall, 91, a retired Elder, died Nov. 12, 2018, a couple weeks before his 92ndbirthday. A private service was held at Capitol Hill UMC in early 2019.

Edwin Hilmore “Hil” Langrall was born Nov. 30, 1926, in Baltimore, to the Rev. Dr. O.B. and Isabel Moore Langrall. As an active family serving in the Baltimore-Washington Conference, the family lived in various locations throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C.

He was a graduate of Western Maryland College in 1950 and from seminary at Duke University and was ordained an Elder in 1952, making him among the five oldest clergy in the conference.  He immediately became Director of the Wesley Foundation in Williamsburg, Va. (College of William and Mary).

Langrall served as a chaplain in the Navy with the 3rdMarine Division in Tokyo and Okinawa following the Korean War from 1955 to 1957.

In 1952, he began a more than 35 years in the ministry, which in addition to the chaplaincy included: Shepherdstown, 1952-1955; First in Brunswick, 1957-59; St. Andrews in Hagerstown, 1959-1963; Emory in D.C., 1963-1973; Christ UMC in Landover Hills, 1973-1980; a year at United in D.C.; then Bradbury Heights in D.C.,1981-86; a year at Foundry UMC, then in 1987 to Eldbrooke in D.C. until his retirement in 1991.

During the 1980s, as the HIV/AIDS epidemic grew, Langrall provided pastoral counseling services in the Whitman-Walker Clinic. In retirement he served as chairman of the board for the Quality of Life Retreats, a ministry of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, dedicated to serving patients and families impacted by HIV/AIDS. In his Mt. Pleasant neighborhood, he was a member of Historic Mt. Pleasant.

In 2012, Langrall and his partner of 52 years, Richard McKenney, were officially married. Together they adopted, purchased or were found by 16 dogs, an obit in the Washington Post reported. McKenney died in 2013.

Survivors include a brother, Bob Langrall, and nephews Jim Langrall of Westminster and David Langrall of Swananoa, N.C,
