Phyllis B. Kemp

Phyllis B. Kemp, 102, the wife of the late Rev. Thomas Ward Kemp, died March 9, 2019, in Felton, Pa. A private service and interment were held April 22 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Glenwood, Md.

Phyllis Bankert was born July 14, 1916. She and T. Ward Kemp were married in 1936 at the beginning of his ministerial career.

His student pastorates were a seven-point charge in the Martinsburg, W. Va. area. She then waited for him while he served on a Navy hospital ship during WW II. After the war, she served with him in rural churches in Alleghany, Calvert and Charles counties. Then began a period of stability as he was appointed to Bethesda Methodist Church in Hamilton, 1958-65. From there he went to Mt. Zion UMC in Howard County for three years, then to St. Lukes in Baltimore for seven years until his death in May 1975. He was 61 years old. She was a widow for more than 40 years.

Predeceasing her in addition to her husband were a son, Vincent T. Kemp and his wife, and grandson Thomas Neal Kemp, as well as siblings.

Survivors include grandchildren Dawn Lee Flanary and her husband; and Jacob Earl Selby and his wife; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethesda UMC, 6300 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD 21214.
