Commemorate World Refugee Day June 20

June is World Refugee Month. This is the time of year we acknowledge the courage and resilience of refugees and their enormous contributions to our community. Every minute 20 people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution, or terror. We can also join together and lift our voices to protest our government's decision to turn its back on refugees and its recent expansion of policies that separate families and make immigration more difficult.

As members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the UMC, we can take action to both help refugees and advocate for more compassionate policies by supporting DC – MD Justice For Our Neighbors.

DC – MD Justice for Our Neighbors provides free, high-quality, professional immigration legal services to immigrants in our community, while at the same time encouraging cross-cultural community building in the DC-Maryland area. DC-MD JFON provides compassion in a legal system that is difficult to navigate, especially for someone unfamiliar with the English language or American culture, and under a significant level of stress from the tragic emotional and physical challenges they have experienced. Our vision is that everyone who needs a safe haven in our neighborhoods will find it among us by having access to the quality professional legal protection they need.

Shine a light with DC – MD Justice For Our Neighbors on World Refugee Day!

1.) Join our World Refugee Day Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 8:30pm. Light a candle -- at your home, with your neighbors, with your church, or with DC – MD Justice For Our Neighbors in person at 30 Courthouse Square in Rockville, MD - to symbolically show support for those seeking refuge. Don't forget to share your photos using #WorldRefugeeDayJFON to show your support from wherever you are!

The event in Rockville will include information about the current refugee situation, refugee bills on the Hill, and DC – MD Justice For Our Neighbors' work.  Please RSVP to if you will be attending in person at the office in Rockville.
