Lay Servant Ministry Training

Lay servant classes may be taken by anyone: member of a congregation, local church leader, or lay servant. All class offerings except Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course may be used as a re-certification class for lay servants.

You may attend classes in any district, based on your own needs.

This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship.

Life Together in the United Methodist Connection-Polity - Advanced Course (via Zoom)

This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. A copy of the Book of Discipline is recommended for this course.

From Your Heart to Theirs: Delivering Effective Sermons - Advanced Course (In-person: Mount Zion UMC)

Moving beyond the basics of public speaking and the foundations necessary for preparing an engaging sermon, this course also includes types of sermons—from exegetical to topical to children’s sermons—as well as how to find a story, how to use the hymnal, and how to move from communication on paper to beyond the paper.

Deaf Certified Lay Servant Spiritual Gifts-Advanced Course (In person - presented in ASL during the UM Congress of the Deaf Conference)

Participants will learn about the importance of spiritual gifts, the diverse skills and gifts given by the Holy Spirit, and how spiritual gifts are an important part of the CLS ministry as they serve their local churches and ministries. The biblical passage from 1 Corinthians 12 will be examined and discussed to support better understanding for spiritual gifts. This class will be in ASL. No voice interpretation is available for this class. Participants should have completed the Basic Class to enroll in this class. This is a 10-hour class (Track 1). When both the Basic and the Advanced classes are completed, participants are eligible to be Certified Lay Servants (CLS) within their local church, pending approval by the church pastor and/or church council.
