Rev. Marion J.G. Bowman

The Rev. Marion J.G. Bowman, 82, formerly known as Jackie Collins, died July 22, 2017. A funeral service was held Aug. 1, at Locust UMC in Columbia with the Rev. Jane Wood officiating. Burial was at Arbutus Memorial Park.

Marion J.G. Bowman was born Dec. 5, 1935, to Marion and Douglass Bowman Sr. in Baltimore. As a young child, she accepted Christ and was baptized at Mt. Olivet Christian Church. She attended public school in Baltimore, Harrisonburg, Va., and Martinsburg, W. Va. She graduated from Bennett College at the age of 19.

She was a public school teacher and later a policewoman in Baltimore, then found her niche as a social worker. She received her Masters of Social Work from Howard University in 1966. After feeling her call to preach many years later, she received a Masters of Divinity and a Masters in Theology from Princeton Seminary. Bowman was ordained in 1994.

She served Asbury-John Wesley UMC in Germantown 1992-1994, and Union Street UMC in Westminster, 1994-1996, at which time she went on extension ministry. Her extension ministry was to fulfill a vision of ministry at the Barden/Bowman School of Excellence Inc. and Isaac Ministry of Joy that functioned under it. She retired in 1998.

She was preceded in death by her son Fred W. Green Jr.

Survivors include her sons, D’Monroe of Reseda, Cal., and Jay Bowman and wife Sharon. Also surviving are two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and one great grandchild.
