The Greater Washington 2017 Spring Discipleship Academy will be held May 6-7, 2017, at Colesville UMC. Classes will run from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, May 6, and 3-5:30 pm on Sunday, May 7. You must attend all 10 hours of training to receive lay servant credit. 

The cost is $35 and all registrants will have the option to purchase a boxed lunch for $10 on Saturday.

All registrations will be online only. We cannot accommodate walk-in registrations.

 

Class Descriptions

Basic Lay Servant ~ Rev. Herbert Brisbon
This basic course includes a study of what it means to be God’s called people and how we may be at work for God in our own communities. The guide for this course is practical, including checklists, outlines and step-by-step plans. Exercises draw on the individuals’ personal experiences and on what they know about their communities. The course provides learning opportunities in three areas of service for lay speakers: leading, caring and communicating. Please note that those registering for this class must read the text prior to the class (see link below).

Advanced Lay Servant ~ The Power of Prayer ~ Pastor Helen Fleming
This session on the power prayer is the ideology to battle spiritual warfare. The comprehension of warfare through theology and principles of prayer prepares for us for the challenges we are facing in the church, the community and the country. Let's learn to use the dominion authority that has been given to us and let's be knowledgeable in order to knock down the walls of Jericho.

Advanced Lay Servant: Our Mission of Leading Worship ~ Rev. Johnsie Cogman
This course is for lay servants who occasionally or regularly lead congregations, organizations, classes, or groups in worship. You will better understand individual worship & corporate worship, learn how to plan worship, and develop practical skills to implement immediately!

Contemporary Worship for the 21st Century: Worship OR Evangelism? by Daniel T. Benedict Jr. and Craig Kennet Miller 

Advanced Lay Servant:  Polity for Bible Moths ~ Rev. Joye Jones
This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. A copy of the 2012 Book of Discipline is recommended (you might consider borrowing a copy from your church) for this course in addition to the required text.
