Most classes run Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (with a 30-minute lunch), and Sunday, 3:00 p.m.–5:30 p.m. Registration is $35 without lunch and $45 with lunch on Saturday. This academy is open to all. If you are seeking to receive certification or re-certification credits, you must attend a 10-hour class. Free courses cannot qualify for credit.

Classes

Basic Lay Servant with Rev. Sue Shorb-Sterling: This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended, and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in con-sistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship. Please note that those registering for this class must read the text prior to the class.

Accountable Discipleship with Rev. Dr. Samuel Holdbrook-Smith: (Advanced Lay Servant) This course focuses on the concept of the household of God, the importance of scripture as divine revelation, Wesleyan understandings of grace, and the importance of the office of class leader in the development of the Methodist movement. You are encouraged to look at your own faith community and see how it is (or is not) a reflection of genuine Christian community. Please note that those registering for this class must read the text prior to the class. This course qualifies for Advanced Lay Servant Credit and Basic Lay Servant Refresher Credit. This course is one of the required courses for Lay Speaker qualification.

From Your Heart to Theirs: Delivering an Effective Sermon with Rev. Participants will also lean what it means to be a spiritual leader and will be equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts.
