Rev. William Calvin Miller

The Rev. William Calvin Miller, 83, a retired Elder, died Aug. 19, 2017. A funeral service was held at Hiss UMC on Aug. 23, with the Rev. Timothy Dowell officiating. Also participating was the Rev. Mark L. Smiley.

Born March 3, 1934, he was one of 14 children, born to William C.  Miller Sr. and Isabelle Miller. He received his undergraduate degree from Shippensburg University and his M.Div. from Wesley Theological Seminary.

He and Marguerite Miller were married in 1984, each bringing to the marriage three children from previous marriages.

Miller had served Daniels, 1966-1968, then Emmanuel in Dorsey, 1968-1972.  In that year he became associate pastor at Millian Memorial UMC in Rockville for four years. In 1976, he went to Gatch Memorial UMC, then from 1983 to 1989 at Brooklyn Heights UMC, at which time he was appointed to Centre St. UMC in Cumberland. In 1994, he moved to St. Luke’s UMC in Woodlawn. He retired in 1997. After retirement, he was a visitation pastor at Arbutus UMC for one year, then in the same capacity at Hiss UMC for many years.  Hiss was his wife’s home church.

During his many years of ministry, he received numerous citations from the state of Maryland for his charity work.

He had many hobbies and interests including reading, gardening, baseball and travel. Among his travels with his wife were visits to Orioles spring training, Germany, to England four times, and Ireland.

He is survived by his wife Marguerite Bolander Miller; and seven children: William R. Miller, Theresa A. Coleman, Robin S. Skiver, Karen E. Maxin, Robert A. Miller, Catherine A. Seufert and Denise L. Jones, and their spouses; he has numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
