Rev. Edward E. Heydt – Dec. 4, 2015

Rev. Edward E. Heydt, 75, a retired Elder, died Dec. 4, 2015. The Rev. Norman Obenshain officiated at a funeral service Dec. 30 at Havre de Grace UMC.

Edward Emanuel Heydt was born in 1940 in Reading, Penn., to the late Edward Samuel Heydt and Bernetha Mae Ditzler Heydt.

Heydt graduated from Cascade College then went on to Asbury Seminary. From 1969-1975 he pastored Mt. Savage UMC and from 1975-1980 at Williamsport UMC.  He was then appointed to St. Paul UMC in Smithsburg until 1989 when he took a short Leave of Absence. In 1990, he went to the Friendship/Carter’s Charge, which he served until his appointment in 1996 to Havre de Grace UMC. He remained there until he retired in 2008, and continued active in the church after retirement.

As a retiree at Havre de Grace, he served on the Mission Team, sang in the choir, was active with United Methodist Men, the Healing Ministry and the Friends of Estonia. He was also involved in the community, serving on the Ethics Commission for the City of Havre de Grace and also the Ethics Committee of the United Methodist Conference.

He served on the Citizen’s Care Center Board of Directors, the North Eastern Maryland Kennel Club Board of Directors, was a member of the Kiwanis Club and a huge supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. Earlier he’d been inducted into the Mt. Savage Hall of Honor for his exemplary service in the community. For many years he served as Chaplain at Harford Memorial Hospital. His hobbies included decoy carving and raising Havanese and Biewer Terriers. He was an enormous part of his community and was loved and trusted by the people in his town.

Survivors include his wife Deborah Sue Heydt, and several children and their spouses: Troy Heydt, Terra Lorshbaugh, Tricia Potter, Noel Ebersole, Gretchen Ebersole, Megan Cobb and Nathan Ebersole. Also surviving are six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also leaves a brother, sister and former wife, Diane Heydt, and numerous nieces and nephews.
