Lucy Belle Haynes Harrell, 84, died June 18, 2018. She was the wife of the Rev. Stanley Harrell and mother of the Rev. Charles Harrell. A funeral service was held at the Eline Funeral Home in Hampstead June 22.

Lucy Belle Haynes was born June 26, 1934 in High Point, N.C., the daughter of the late Colon and Mildred Swaim Hayes. She had three brothers.  She graduated from Hasty High School and received her B.A. from High Point College (now University). She worked towards a Masters degree at Towson University and the University of Maryland.

She and Stanley G. Harrell married in 1959. They had two children who survive.

Born to be a teacher, she taught elementary grades in Guilford County, North Carolina, and in Maryland’s Washington, Carroll and Prince George’s counties.  She was known for helping students with learning disabilities and those with discipline problems. She made “fabulous” bulletin boards.

Harrell had a local preacher’s license for more than 55 years and worked hard in the local churches her husband served, teaching Sunday school classes and as chair of different church committees.  She served on a mission team to Cuba in 1956 before Castro took over. After she retired, she set up libraries in four different churches and guided others in setting up their own.

Harrell was an avid reader, loved to cook and bake, enjoyed doing embroidery, working in the yard and cultivating house plants.

She enjoyed traveling and was a member of Wesley UMC, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Social Order of the Beauceant, and the Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her husband and their children, Charles L. Harrell, a retired United Methodist pastor, and Patricia Harrell Daughtery and their spouses; and four grandchildren.
