A new approach for a Discipleship Academy class

Discipleship Academy Online

Deepening Your Effectiveness – A new format for a new day!  Class begins November 1 with weekly reading assignments with online discussion each week – then concludes with a two day workshop December 3-4 at the Baltimore-Washington Conference Mission Center, involving deep discussion and collaborative work on putting this text to work in our local churches.  Every church understands it has a mandate to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ. But not every church has a plan to make it happen. This course will present a fresh framework for understanding individual Christian development; assist the participants in attracting new believers; and move them toward Christian maturity Bishop Hayes of the Oklahoma Conference shares this review of the text and its authors: “At a time when the church is struggling to understand what it means to make disciples for Jesus Christ, Dan Glover and Claudia Lavy have skillfully managed to put in our hands a road map that takes us to a place in the disciple-making process where we’ve never been before.”  Class taught by Rev. Victoria Starnes, Guide for the Annapolis-Southern Region.

Coach Approach Ministry Training

NEW - Want to find out more about coach approach ministry training?  Watch or listen to five short discussions by trainer Ron Renaud and conference guides Rod Miller and Chris Holmes about the eight basic coaching skills.

Committed disciples of Jesus experience greater fulfillment in ministry when their pastors and key church leaders “come along beside them” to assist them in being their best in ministry. The objective of teaching the basic skills of coaching at the local church level is to help church leaders deepen their effectiveness in ministry and to make a God-sized impact on their communities.

The Discipleship Academy of the Baltimore-Washington Conference has contracted with a Master Certified Coach in the International Coaching Federation (ICF) who has taught the skills of coaching to literally thousands of persons around the world.

• Learn how to ask powerful questions to focus ministry
• Learn how to expand the possibilities for ministry in the local church
• Learn how to foster greater fulfillment in serving
• Learn how to challenge and affirm the ministry of the laity
• Learn how to set specific goals individually with ministry leaders
• Learn the importance of accountability in doing the work of Christ
• Leave with a ministry plan for how to use these skills in your ministry

Initial Training: The highly experiential and interactive initial training will be held in your region  from 9:00 until 5:00. Lunch will be provided.

Group Coach Training Calls: There will be four follow-up group calls held in the evening hours after the completion of the initial training. During these calls additional coaching skills for ministry will be introduced, demonstrated, and practiced by participants in each region. (Calls will be recorded for those who must miss a call).

WORKSHOP OFFERINGS (Choose One PM Session at the time of your registration)

Funding Your Congregation’s Vision —William Chaney
People give generously when there is a compelling vision.  Learn the key elements of a clear compelling vision and how to achieve momentum throughout the congregation to achieve the vision. Generous stewards normally do not start out that way.  Most have moved there as they have grown in discipleship. Learn how to prepare a spiritual foundation for giving.   Learn methods to help people make their first gift, become regular givers, and grow to tithing and beyond. You will also learn to move your congregation from a “pay the bills” to a “live the vision”.

Faith Sharing—Chris Gobrecht
This class helps participants get in touch with their own love story with God, in Christ. We will consider how and when they came to faith and other relevant events and people who have helped them grow in faith. We will explore what a difference Christ has made in our lives and how and when to share these experiences in a compelling way. While in the classroom participants will practice sharing their story with others so when they complete the course they are ready to tell their story to the world.

Fresh Leadership for the Local Church  —John Rudisill
How do I find new leaders for my congregation?  This includes helping persons to identify their passion in ministry, developing clear ministry descriptions specific to your congregation, and matching up persons to ministries.  We will discuss how to develop relationships of communication and accountability within the organizational structure.  Find out how to turn the nominations process upside down, and how to help others to understand when it is time for them to try something new.  Tootsie Rolls provided to each participant (because United Methodists cannot resist food, right?)

Practical Aids for Church Leaders—Terri Rae Chattin
In this class we will be focusing on ministry rather than on administration and on the vision of the congregation.  We will learn how to maintain working relationships with the pastor and the lay leadership and how to guide the work of your committee by preparing agendas, conducting meetings, communicating with members and monitoring progress of the members.  You will become familiar with the resources and organization of The United Methodist Church.  Tootsie Pops provided to each participant.

Ministering to Older Adults—Rob Fisher
The need for ministry with older adults is great as the baby boomer generation moves into their golden years.  Explore how ministry with older adults can be a vital part of your church.

Growing a Church Beyond 50 – Andrew Cooney
There are different opportunities and challenges in the churches of any size.  This course will look at ways that smaller churches can use theiri strengths to grow beyond 50 in attendance.  We will look at some of the cultural, programmatic, financial, and leadership challenges that it takes t get to a new place as a church.
