Study 203: Advanced Lay Speaker Training - "Preaching: Formation of Messages Through Buttrick's Homiletic."
This will be an approved advanced lay speaking course that can be used for Certification and Recertification (as it will help lay speakers with sermon preparation). It will be a peer-driven class that focuses on the development of moves, framing, image, and metaphor, along with many other aspects of preaching. In addition, we will lay the groundwork for involved exegetical preparation, including literary criticism, historical criticism, among others. Preparation is required prior to this class, as students will be coming to class on the first session with scriptures and sermon introduction in hand. Instructor: Pastor Art Monroe, Jr., Morgan Chapel UMC/Mt. Olive UMC.

Book ordering information: The book can be ordered, and it is highly recommended, but it is not required for the class. The author is David Buttrick, who retired as professor of homiletics and worship at Vanderbilt Divinity School. The book title is as follows: "Homiletic: Moves and Structures." ISBN: 978-0-8006-2096-7. This can be purchased at Cokesbury, but can also be purchased new/used at other sites such as Amazon, Borders, etc.

After registering for the class, please contact Pastor Art at amonroejr@hotmail.com, or by phone at 410-374-5136, so he can prepare you for the first class.

Study 305: Healthy Small Churches - This class has been approved for credit for Advanced Lay Speaking. Lay speakers taking this course for credit will need to take the extra 2-hour segment on the last day.
As Wesleyans, United Methodists know the value of small groups. It may be said that we have many small membership churches because that's how our denomination began - as linked-together small groups! There are many small membership churches that are healthy and vital, and there are many that are struggling. The goal of this class is to look at elements of vitality for small membership churches and to develop a practical plan for moving toward greater health and vitality. Faculty for this class have been chosen for their experience and expertise in leading small churches, and a different teacher will be present weekly.
The Healthy Church - Rev. David Carter-Rimbach
Who We Are - Now and Future! - Rev. Jane Wood
Vision and Mission - Pastor Kathy Altman
The Nitty-Gritty - Rev. Wade Martin
* The Critical Factor: Leadership - Rev. Cynthia Moore, Rev. Vivian McCarthy. This is the add-on segment for those seeking advanced lay speaking certification credit.
