Church History:
In 1846, land was deeded for the purpose of erecting a house to be used jointly as a school and a place of worship for all denominations. The school house church continued to grow until 1866, when its walls were no longer large enough to hold its congregation and a new house was determined upon. People of all denominations went together and raised money for a new church building. The new structure was erected for $3,200 and dedicated in May 1868. In this same year Mt. Vernon became a member of the Baltimore Conference. This modest structure (dismantled during the 1960's and remembered by many community residents) was replaced by the present church which was dedicated September 1960. The old church property and cemetery is located at the intersection of Deep Run Rd. and Prospect Rd.
